Japan Rail Pass eligibility
Check Japan Rail Pass visa requirements, child ages and embassy certificate rules for Japanese nationals before ordering.
Visitors to Japan
The Japan Rail Pass is for eligible international visitors entering Japan with Temporary Visitor status. Your passport must show the correct entry permission. Having a tourist visa alone does not guarantee eligibility; the entry status in your passport matters.
Japanese nationals living abroad
Japanese nationals must have lived outside Japan for at least 10 consecutive years and provide the appropriate Japanese embassy or consulate certificate. Obtain this before ordering. We cannot complete your order without confirmation.
Required documentation
日本国籍のお客様は大使館発行の在留届出済証明が必要です。12歳以上の日本国籍のお客様は、ご自身の証明書が必要です。Contact your Japanese embassy or consulate to confirm which original documents are accepted.
Traveling with children
Child passes are for ages 6 to 11 and cost 50% of our adult pass price. Children under 6 travel free under JR rules, usually sharing a seat. Travelers aged 12 and over need an adult pass.
