Big trip. Little questions.
Everything you need to know before your Japan Rail Pass adventure.
What is the Japan Rail Pass?+
The Japan Rail Pass is an official travel pass for eligible visitors. It offers travel on covered JR services for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. You receive a physical exchange order to redeem in Japan.
What is the difference between Ordinary and Green?+
Ordinary offers standard-class seating. Green offers more spacious, comfortable Green car seating on eligible services. Both cover the same eligible JR network.
Can children use a Japan Rail Pass?+
Yes. Ages 6 to 11 receive a 50% discount on our adult price. Children under 6 generally travel free without a separate reserved seat. Ages 12 and above need an adult pass.
Can Japanese citizens buy a pass?+
Eligible Japanese nationals must have lived overseas for 10 consecutive years or longer and have the required original embassy or consulate certificate. This must be obtained before ordering.
Is the pass sent by email?+
No. Your Japan Rail Pass exchange order is sent physically to your address. Allow enough time for delivery before departure.
Are Nozomi and Mizuho trains included?+
Not with the pass alone. A separate special ticket is required to use Nozomi or Mizuho services with your pass. Most other eligible Shinkansen services are covered.
Can I cancel my pass?+
With €39 cancellation insurance per ticket, you can cancel for any reason within 90 days for a 100% pass-value refund. Otherwise, the refund is 85% minus transaction fees both ways. Original passes must be returned and must not be activated, lost or damaged.
Can I order more than 90 days before my trip?+
Yes. We schedule issue and physical dispatch closer to departure so the voucher remains valid for your travel. Always follow the printed redemption deadline.
