The 160 cm rule
On the Shinkansen each bag may measure up to 160 cm when you add its length, width and height together. Most medium suitcases and backpacks fit easily on the overhead racks.
Bags between 160 and 250 cm
Larger suitcases between 160 cm and 250 cm on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen need a seat with an oversized luggage area. With your Japan Rail Pass this reservation is free.

How to reserve the luggage area
Ask at a JR ticket office or choose a seat with a luggage area at the Shinkansen ticket machine. The space is behind the last row of the car, so your bag stays right next to you.
Two bags per person
Each traveler can bring two pieces of luggage plus a small hand bag. Keep valuables with you and place larger cases in the overhead rack or reserved luggage area.
