Exchange or booking only?

Not every JR counter exchanges vouchers. Offices marked voucher exchange swap your exchange order for a physical Japan Rail Pass. Reserved seat ticket machines with a passport reader only hand out passes bought online on the official JR site, but once you have your pass you can use them to reserve seats for free.

Exchange office questions

Where is the best place to exchange my Japan Rail Pass?

At the airport you arrive at. Narita, Haneda, Kansai and New Chitose airports all have JR exchange offices, so you can start your trip right away.

Can I exchange my voucher at a ticket machine?

No. Paper vouchers must be exchanged at a staffed JR office. The ticket machines only issue passes bought online on the official JR site.

Are the exchange offices open every day?

Most are open every day, but hours vary and some close on certain weekdays or holidays. Check the current hours of your office before you go.

Can I exchange in one city and travel from another?

Yes. Once exchanged, your Japan Rail Pass works on JR trains across Japan from your chosen start date.

How long does the exchange take?

Usually only a few minutes per traveler. At busy airport offices in the morning there can be a short queue.
